Call for thousands of civil servant roles to move from London to Coventry

A Midlands MP has called for thousands of central government jobs to be moved to Coventry in a bid to save money and regenerate the city.

Dudley MP Ian Austin has submitted a bill to parliament calling for government departments to transfer civil servant roles to the Black Country, Birmingham and Coventry.

The bill calls for thousands of officials working for the Home Office, the Department for Business or Department for Transport to be moved to the West Midlands so that “London-based civil servants can find out what life is like in places like the Black Country, Birmingham and Coventry”.

The Dudley MP says government departments and 100,000 civil servants should be moved out of London to the regions.

He says it would modernise the civil service, help regenerate 50 towns and cities around the UK, save £10billion initially and £725million each year afterwards.

Austin wants the proposals to be part of devolution deals being negotiated between the government and regions, including the West Midlands.

He said: “This bill is an opportunity to transform the way government works, bringing decisions closer to local people and enabling civil servants to find out what life is like in places like the Midlands.

“It would save taxpayers more than £10bn and distribute wealth more fairly too, transferring 100,000 jobs and billions of investment from the capital to the rest of the country.”

The Telegraph recently revealed that civil servants took home more than £7.8m last year for roles in Coventry, according to the latest figures.

According to the Annual Civil Service Employment Survey, 220 Coventry-based civil servants picked up wages of over £50,000 from central government in 2014.

Figures showed 2,210 civil servants in Coventry during 2014, compared to 1,700 in 2010.

During that period, the percentage of the civil service workforce earning more than £50,000 has risen from 1.8 per cent to ten per cent.

Organisations which employ civil servants in the city include Local Government Ombudsman, The Skills Funding Agency, the Probation Service, the Land Registry and the Standards and Testing Agency.
