To All Members
I am writing to make you aware that the Conservative Party manifesto, which has been published today, includes a pledge to create an infrastructure police force comprising of the MDP, Civil Nuclear Constabulary and British Transport Police.
Further details will be included within our weekly summary of political and parliamentary activity. Members will be aware that the Federation had been in close contact with officials at the MoD, Home Office and Cabinet Office during the last 12 months when a review of policing was being undertaken to assess the feasibility of such an infrastructure force.
We had previously been notified that no such amalgamation or merger of the MDP, CNC and BTP was planned in the short to medium term, with the Government instead pressing for greater collaboration and interoperability amongst our forces. While the inclusion of an infrastructure policing pledge is unexpected given previous feedback from the Home Office, the Federation will be in close contact with officials when appropriate (given civil servants are currently required to adhere to purdah ahead of the election) regarding any movement towards an merged force.
We will of course continue to keep members closely informed of our communications with ministers and officials.
