The holidaymaker from Australia fell 60ft (18m) down a cliff slope after slipping off a cliff path in Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

After getting caught on the brambles, coastguard teams and MoD Police lowered him down the sheer drop to the ground.

The man suffered cuts, abrasions and a bruised back, coastguards said.

The alarm was raised at about 11:30 BST after the man fell near Fort Picklecombe.

Marine Police from Plymouth's Devonport Naval Base had been carrying out a warship escort in Plymouth Sound when they were called to the cliffs.

Officers landed their rigid inflatable boats and worked their way up the cliffs to secure the man, who was slowly slipping towards the drop, MoD Police said.

Three coastguards teams were also called out and administered first aid.

The injured man was put on a stretcher and transported across Plymouth Sound on an MoD boat to an ambulance.

He is not believed to be seriously injured.
