Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week

As we mark Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week (4–10 May 2026), it’s an important opportunity to highlight the support available to colleagues navigating the transition into parenthood—and the difference that understanding and guidance can make.

Ch Insp Hannah Ellis has been instrumental in strengthening this support within the Ministry of Defence Police. As the Force’s maternity and paternity coordinator, she has helped shape a more informed and supportive environment for officers during pregnancy, parenthood and their return to work.

Motivated by her own experience of feeling unsupported during maternity leave—particularly during the pandemic—Hannah set out to improve things for others. She developed the maternity and paternity Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), providing clear guidance for both officers and line managers at what can often be a complex and uncertain time.

Alongside this, she has personally supported many colleagues, offering practical advice and reassurance on matters such as shared parental leave, IVF, adoption and flexible working. Her approachable and empathetic approach has helped ensure officers feel supported, informed and connected.

Her work was recognised at the DPF Annual Awards in November 2025 when Hannah received the Debbie Williams Friends of the Federation Award, reflecting the positive impact she continues to have across the Force. Alongside her wider leadership role, she remains committed to ensuring colleagues feel valued and supported as they balance their professional and personal lives.

Maternal mental health matters. Creating a culture where people feel able to seek support, ask questions and share their experiences is key to ensuring no one feels isolated during this significant life stage.

If you or someone in your team would benefit from support, please reach out and start the conversation.
