Pay and Allowances

Circular 39/16, dated 08 July 2016 advised you that we have written to the department seeking to apply the recommendation of the Police Remuneration review body, to increase the salary of federated ranks by 1% effective from 01 September 2016, together with a similar increase in certain allowances applicable to MDP Dog Handlers & London Weighting.

I am pleased to report that we have recently received a letter from DG HOCS confirming that MoD will implement the 1% increase to police salaries as soon as possible. However, the letter went onto say that at this stage it cannot be confirmed that allowances will be increased in line with the Home Office decisions advising that, in their opinion, the 95% relativity applies only to salary and not to allowances, which are considered case by case, on the basis of business need and affordability. Needles to say, we do not agree with this position and will make the necessary representations to rectify this.

The letter went onto say that all MDP allowances are currently under review and that we would be written to once this is complete. We have not, prior to this letter, been informed of such a review.

We are presently seeking clarification of this review of MDP allowances, particularly having just endured a lengthy TACOS review, in which allowances were removed from us.
