Circular 37/16

Dear Colleagues;

Weight of Equipment

The DPF and our solicitors THOMPSONS have recently secured a noteworthy sum of money / compensation for a member, who as a consequence of back injury, lost their job as a cause of poorly fitted body armor.

Given MDP’s recent emphasis on fitness, it seems to us that the weight of equipment (WOE) issue is presently taking a back seat.

With our employers presently requiring you to retain full operational capability until well into your 60’s, it is imperative that any shortfalls in operating practice and procedure, by example ignoring control measures in risk assessments, that may result in injury are highlighted and fully reported by you through the chain of command.

It is also important for you that any injuries you may receive, or near misses as a consequence of WOE are similarly reported.

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer an injury, Federation members may obtain legal advice by telephoning Thompson Solicitors on 0800 587 7520.

Remember please that there are legally defined time limits for making claims.
